Who We Are

We are a group of geocachers in the Porland Metro area, who not only enjoy Geocaching, but desire to promote this pasttime in the city we love.

Who We Are Not

We are not a governing body of Geocaching. We are not a group that meets for regular meetings with agendas, officers, or voting. We are not geeks or Klingon wannabes.

A History of Geocaching in Portland

Geocaching actually began right here in the Portland Metro area on May 3, 2000 near the town of Boring. The original stash was placed by Dave Ulmer to celebrate the removal of Selective Availability by President Clinton. Thanks to Dave you can now view a video he made as he prepared this first cache. To download the video click here. By May 6, that cache had been visited at least twice (For a more complete history of the beginnings of Geocaching worldwide, check out this link). The original site is now commemmorated by a plaque set up by Team 360 and other cachers around the globe.

Since that time, caching in Portland has seen tremendous growth. There are now over 200 caches in the Metro area, and hundreds of players.

The area's first gathering of Geocachers was on June 16, 2001. Makaio planned this get together.

The area's oldest existing cache is Inspirational.
