Local Areas Off Limits to Geocaching
While there are lots of fantastic areas to place caches in the
Portland Metro area, there are also some areas known to be off limits.
In an effort to assist you in the placement of a geocache, and to
respect the decisions made by the individual land management agencies,
these areas are listed below. As a reminder, every geocache placed
is the responsibility of the individual who placed it. Make sure
you understand and are familiar with the guidelines
of www.geocaching.com prior to the placement
of any geocache.

check or enforce the placement of geocaches in the Portland
Metro Area. If you find a cache in violation of the policies
of appropriate land management agencies, please contact the

Questions & Answers
- What are the guidelines for placing a cache
in the Portland Metro area? - Guidelines for
placing caches can be found at www.geocaching.com.
- Does pdxgeocaching.com have any say in the
placement of a cache locally? - No! All geocaches
placed are the responsibility of the individual who placed
it.
- Should I obtain permission before placing
a geocache in park near my home? - There are
two schools of thought here. The first is that permission
should always be obtained from the appropriate land management
agency prior to placing a geocache. The second school of
thought says that where an activity is not specifically
prohibited, no permission is required. By way of analogy,
if one is not prohibited from playing frisbee in the park,
or having a picnic, then one should not have to seek permission.
This assumes that the land in question is public land. One
should always seek permission to place a geocache on privately
owned land. Very simply - it is up to the individual to
decide.
- I've decided to seek permission prior to placing
my geocache. Who should I contact? - Pdxgeocaching.com
and it's site administration could not even begin to help
you in this. Pick up a phone book, and call the appropriate
land management agency.
- Why have the parks below been declared off
limits? - There could be a variety of reasons.
Land Managers may be concerned about safety or environmental
issues at these particular locations, they may be in the
process of trying to determine a policy for geocaching in
their parks, or they may be managed by individuals who are
unfamiliar with or opposed to geocaching. You are by all
means encouraged to approach them for further clarification,
or to seek a reversal of their policy.
